Imran Awan, Wasserman Schultz’ former assistent reportedly got arrested after defrauding the Congressional Federal Credit Union for $165,000. Awan lied about a property in Alexandria, claiming it was his primal residence when in reality – it was just a rental. On tuesday he was caught by the FBI while trying to flee to Pakistan. This happened on the same day on wich he got fired by Wassermann Schultz.
Awan has worked for many democratic members of congress since 2004.
The lawyer of the IT-staffer, Chris Gowen, said his client wasn’t fleeing the country, but going to stay with family in Pakistan after being “unjustly fired”. He was fearing harassment from “extremist right-wing bloggers.” He claimed the attacks had been going on for several months. He then added: “Because we are confident in the integrity of the U.S. justice system, we are confident that Mr. Awan will soon be able to clear his name and get on with his life.”
Mark Tapscott from The Daily Caller wrote that Gowen was “(…) a long-time campaigner for former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (…)”
